Lynnwood Glen is older than Faerie Glen, and so is its plumbing
Lynnwood Glen was first established in 1967, when it was the most eastern suburb of Pretoria. Faerie Glen took that title in 1974. St Alban’s College, founded in 1963, sits in Lynnwood Glen, and the houses around it have now been through close to sixty Highveld summers and winters.
Age shows in plumbing in particular ways. Electric geysers only had to meet SANS 10254 from June 2001, so an original installation may lack the drip tray, the vacuum breakers or the pressure control valve a replacement must now have. Older houses may also have galvanised supply pipes or clay drains, which a pressure test or a camera confirms before anyone guesses.
The water side varies street to street. In April 2023 the City listed Lynnwood and Lynnwood Ridge under the Koedoesnek low-level reservoir alongside parts of Faerie Glen. By its July 2026 notice Lynnwood appeared under the Lynnwood Reservoir, while Lynnwood Park sits on the Parkmore low-level list. One name on the map, several supply paths.
An older network also shows itself in bursts. In January 2026 a fire hydrant burst at 306 Freesia Street in Lynnwood Ridge and flooded a local business, Rekord reported. Hydrants and mains are the City’s to repair. The pipe from the meter to the house belongs to the owner.
So the useful question for a Lynnwood house is not only what has failed, but what else is original. When a plumber is in a 1960s or 1970s roof for an element, the written report should also list what does not meet the current standard, even if nobody asked.
