Gas Geyser Installation
Faerie Glen

Gas geyser installation in Faerie Glen starts at the tap, not at the gas bottle. Most instantaneous gas geysers need a minimum water pressure before they will light, and this suburb’s supply drops during City outages, so the pressure is measured before a model is chosen. Pressure problems are fixed first.

Why gas geysers misbehave, and what sits behind it

Most of them trace back to water flow, the gas supply or the flue rather than the heater itself.

It clicks but will not light

Most instantaneous gas geysers only ignite once enough water is flowing through them. Low pressure, a partly closed valve or a clogged aerator can keep the flow under that trigger point. On battery-ignition models, flat batteries produce the same symptom.

The flame drops out when a second tap opens

Opening another tap splits the flow, and the heater can fall below its minimum. SANS 10252-1 notes that instantaneous heaters cause larger pressure drops downstream than storage geysers, which is why pipe sizing matters at installation.

No hot water during a power failure

Fan-forced models such as the Rinnai Infinity run on 240 V and will not light without mains power. Battery and hydro-generator models do not need the grid, so the model decides whether gas solves the problem it was bought for.

A smell of gas

Close the cylinder or isolation valve, keep naked flames at least 5 m away, and check joints with soapy water, never a flame. That is the sequence Totai’s manual gives. The installation then needs a registered gas installer before it is used again.

Soot or a lazy yellow flame

Soot around the casing or a yellow flame points to a combustion problem such as a blocked flue, poor ventilation or the wrong gas pressure. Totai lists a blocked flue among its faults and specifies a gas supply of 2,8 kPa at the heater.

The heater sits in a closed bathroom

SANS 10087-1 requires a conventional gas geyser in a bathroom to be flued to the outside with permanent ventilation, because it burns a lot of gas in a small room. Some models are approved for outdoor installation only.

A gas geyser needs water pressure that Faerie Glen does not always have

Most people in Faerie Glen who ask about gas want one thing: hot water that keeps going when the electricity does not. The City has logged electricity faults that reached the suburb on 28 January 2023, on 17 May 2023 along a cable to the Glen Village Shopping Centre ring main unit, on 4 January 2025, and on 25 December 2025 when a feeder from Wapadrand failed. A gas geyser looks like the obvious answer.

The catch is the water, not the gas. Most instantaneous gas geysers only light once enough water flows through them. Bosch’s South African brochure gives its battery-ignition Therm 4200 a minimum of 0.75 bar and the hydro-powered Therm 4300 a minimum of 1.0 bar. Rinnai’s Infinity 16 needs at least 2.4 litres a minute to run, and 75 kPa to reach its full output.

This suburb’s supply does not always clear those figures. When Rand Water’s Mapleton booster station lost power in April 2023, the City warned of “low water pressure to no water” across reservoirs that feed Faerie Glen, and in May 2025 Rand Water stopped pumping for four and a half days to connect a new pipeline. A geyser that needs a full bar to fire will stay cold in exactly the week it was bought for.

There are two honest ways round it. One is a low-pressure model: Bosch lists heaters that work from 0.1 to 0.4 bar, and Totai’s smaller units take a supply between 15 and 80 kPa. The other is to fix the supply first with a tank and a booster pump, which helps every shower in the house as well. Readings at the meter and at the planned position decide which one suits your house.

Power is the second check. Fan-forced heaters such as the Rinnai Infinity need 240 V to run their fan, so they go dark in an outage just like an electric geyser. Battery and hydro models do not depend on the grid. Matching the model to both the water and the power is what makes gas worth installing here.

Before buying a gas geyser, have the water pressure measured where it will hang, and check whether the model needs mains power.

How a gas installation is put together

The same whichever model you choose.

  • A registered gas installer signs it off

Gas work must be done by an installer registered with SAQCC Gas, who issues the Certificate of Conformity. Any installer’s registration can be looked up on the SAQCC Gas website.

  • The cylinder placed by the rules

SANS 10087-1 keeps a cylinder 1 m from openings below the valve, 2 m from drains and manholes, and 3 m from the boundary unless a firewall is built.

  • Flued and ventilated

Indoor heaters are flued to the outside and the room keeps permanent ventilation. A house may store no more than 19 kg of gas indoors.

  • The water side sized for the heater

Hot and cold pipes are sized so the heater keeps its flow when other taps open, as SANS 10252-1 asks for with instantaneous heaters.

Measure first, then choose the heater

The water pressure decides the model, so it is measured before anything is ordered.

  1. Send the details

Where the geyser would go, how many bathrooms it should feed, and whether gas is on site already.

  2. Measure and choose

Water pressure and flow are read at the meter and at the planned position, and the model is matched to the readings.

  3. Install

Heater, flue, cylinder and pipework go in to SANS 10087-1, with the gas side done by a registered installer.

  4. Test and sign-off

Ignition is tested with several taps open and the joints are leak-tested. The gas side is signed off by a SAQCC Gas registered installer, whose Certificate of Conformity you keep.

Gas geyser questions

Where it can go, what it needs, and what it costs.

What does a gas geyser installation cost in Faerie Glen?

It depends on the model, the flue route and how far the cylinder sits from the heater, so it is quoted after a site check. No reliable dated price list for gas installations exists to quote here. The call-out fee is stated before the visit, the written quote comes before any work, and the prices page explains how labour is counted.

What water pressure does a gas geyser need?

It varies by model, so read the spec sheet before buying. Bosch’s mainstream Therm models need 0.75 to 1.0 bar, its low-pressure range works from 0.1 to 0.4 bar, and Totai’s smaller heaters take 15 to 80 kPa. Dewhot’s low-pressure units use a flow sensor and start at 1 to 2 litres a minute.

Do gas geysers work without electricity?

Battery-ignition and hydro-generator models do, because they light from the water flow. Fan-forced models need a 240 V supply to run the fan and stay off during a power failure.

Can a gas geyser go inside a bathroom?

Only if it is flued to the outside and the bathroom has permanent ventilation, as SANS 10087-1 requires. Some heaters are approved for outdoor installation only, so the model narrows the options.

How far must the gas bottle be from a window or a drain?

SANS 10087-1 keeps a cylinder 1 m from any opening below the valve, 2 m from drains, pits and manholes, and 3 m from the boundary unless there is a firewall. Distances from electrical ignition sources differ between summaries of the standard’s editions, so the installer applies the current edition on site.

Do I need a gas certificate to sell my house?

Yes. A Certificate of Conformity is issued after an installation, an alteration or a change of ownership, and a current one is needed when the house is sold. Keep it with the property papers.

How do I check that a gas installer is registered?

SAQCC Gas keeps a public register that can be searched by province, registration number or suburb. Registered installers also carry an SAQCC Gas card showing which kinds of gas work they may do.

Can one person do the water side and the gas side?

Only if that person holds both registrations. The Certificate of Conformity for the gas comes from the registered gas installer, while connecting the water side is plumber’s work under the City’s by-laws. Ask to see both before the work starts.
